Emily Fields
Emily Fields. Emily has always been very insecure. When Ali was alive, she called Emily Killer because she was so protective of Ali. The truth was that Emily had a crush on Ali, and one time in Ali’s tree house, they kissed. Emily wrote Ali a love letter that showed up from -A later on in the series. A new girl moved into Ali’s old house. Her name was Maya and Emily hung out with her a lot and they kissed. A had pictures of Emily kissing Maya and leaked it to the whole school. When Emily’s parents found out they sent her to a place to help her overcome her feelings for girls. It did not work so Emily was sent to live with her over conservative aunt and uncle. The first night there, Emily and her cousins snuck out of the house to go to a party, where Emily danced with a girl. The next morning her aunt and uncle found out and asked the kids what was going on. Emily’s cousins blamed it on her, and she went back home. After that her parents were really excepting of Emily.
Emily later gets a text from -A- and Emily asks her how she can save Ali. -A tells her to dress in an Amish outfit and go to a specific Amish town. Emily believes she will find Ali there. But when Emily gets there, she finds out that Darien Wilden grew up there and moved to Rosewood during Rumspringa.
Minor Characters
Who is Ian Thomas? He is the boy that was with Ali, Spencer, and Melissa at the same time. Ian was the first person who was arrested for Ali’s murder. He was put on house arrest until the trial. But the girls get a mysterious A text saying that they should go to the woods behind Spencer’s house. When they get there they find Ian’s dead body. When the cops show up, the body is gone. Later the reader discovers that Ali killed Ian and his dead body was found in the closet with Melissa in Ali’s Pocono house.
Who is Mona Vanderwaal? When ‘Ali’ was alive Mona was the geeky nerd. But with the help of Hanna she turned into the new “it-girl”. She also helped the real Ali take revenge on the four girls. Mona hit Hanna with her SUV. Mona tried to kill Spencer. But Mona tragically died falling off of a cliff.
Who is Jenna Cavanaugh? Jenna was friends with Mona before she became popular. Jenna used to be raped by her step-brother Toby and asked ‘Ali’ for help. Ali told her four friends that they should go try to get Toby in trouble by shooting off fireworks on his lawn. Even though she told the girls this, she was really planning a prank with Jenna to get rid of Toby. But Ali lost control of the firework and blinded Jenna. The real Ali later killed Jenna.
Who is Toby Cavanaugh? Toby was a very troubled boy. He raped his step-sister Jenna. So when Ali’s prank worked, he was sent off to a boarding school in Maine. When he came back, he started going to another school in the Rosewood area. He asked Emily to Foxy and she accepted. They left early and Toby started to scare Emily, so she jumped out of his car and ran through the woods to her house. He followed and tried to brake in. When he couldn’t, he went back into the woods and committed suicide.
Differences
What are the biggest differences between the season one of the show and the books? First of all, the Pretty Little Liars hair colors. Hanna is supposed to have auburn hair, not blonde. Spencer is supposed to have blonde hair, not brown. Emily is supposed to have reddish-blonde hair, not black. Aria is the only one who resembles her character in the book. In the show all the girls go to homecoming. In the book, they are supposed to go to Foxy, the biggest social get-together in their area. Spencer’s date to homecoming, Alex, who is also her boyfriend, is not mentioned once in the book. She is supposed to go to Foxy with Andrew Campbell, the smartest boy at their school. The night of homecoming/Foxy, Toby is supposed to commit suicide after trying to break into Emily’s house.
Emily’s family is supposed to have four children. Emily is the youngest, not an only child. Aria’s dad is supposed to move out, not her mom. One of the most jurassic changes probably has to be the time frame between Ali’s disappearance and her funeral. In the show it is only a year, in the book it is three years.
Hanna Marin
Hanna Marin. Hanna was the chubby friend out of the five girls. Hanna’s parents are also divorced. When Hanna’s dad moved out he fell in love with a new woman, Isabella. Isabella had a daughter named Kate, the same age as Hanna. The only time Hanna visited her dad in ________, she brought Ali. While Hanna’s dad was calling her fat, she was making herself throw-up in his bathroom. She continued to do this even after Ali died. Freshman year Hanna tried out for cheerleading and only two girls did not make it; she and Mona. Hanna and Mona decided that they would do whatever it took to become the “it-girls,” and they did. Hanna also shoplifted. The first time she got caught, her mother had her back and slept with the officer dealing with that case. The night of Foxy, the famous party, Hanna tried to convince her boyfriend, Sean, to sleep with her. When he said no, she stole and crashed his car. Later on through the series, Hanna gets a certain -A text and she recognizes the number: Mona. She told all the girls to meet her at the Rosewood Day parking lot, and as Hanna ran across the parking lot to meet them, she got hit by a car. And who purposely ran her over? Mona. After Hanna finally got out of the hospital, Kate convinced Hanna’s dad to send her to a mental hospital. Hanna lived their until the police retrieved her and brought her to the station.
Spencer Hastings
Spencer Hastings. Spencer is the youngest daughter in her family. Her family is filthy rich and has extreme high expectations. Spencer’s only sister, Melissa, is older and always has what Spencer wants. When Ali and Spencer first became friends, both girls had a fling with Melissa’s then-boyfriend, Ian Thomas. That wasn’t Melissa’s only boyfriend she stole. In the present day of the series, Spencer had a thing with Wren. This time her parents found out and were disgusted with her. Ali also was always one-upping Spencer. Ali had all the cute boys falling over her and Ali made the JV field hockey team.
Spencer was really stressed about her school work and decided to steal Melissa’s paper on economics. When her teacher read it, he entered it in a national contest called the Golden Orchid. She told her parents that she stole it and her parents told her to lie about writing it. When she finally won it, she told the truth and lost the award.
Spencer also was disowned by her grandmother. The will said that Spencer was not a ‘naturally-born’ grandchild. So Spencer assumed she was adopted and set out to find her real mom. When she found a woman named Olivia on the internet, she traveled to New York to meet her. Olivia scammed Spencer and ended up stealing over two million dollars. When Spencer asked her parents about it, they explained that Olivia was Spencer’s surrogate mother. Spencer learned to love her family and ends up appreciating her life.
What's the ending?
So, what’s the end? Is Ali still alive? Did Ali commit suicide? Neither. The truth is that Ali had a twin sister, Courtney. Courtney was not mentally stable. She spent most off her time in various mental hospitals. She visited home every now and then. Courtney was a secret to everyone. Only her close family and a few others knew about her. The day the girls tried to steal Ali’s time capsule flag, Courtney was visiting. She went outside and saw the girls and pretended to be friends with them. So, when her parents saw her hanging out with normal people, they thought she was Ali. And so the real Ali was sent off to a mental hospital. The whole time that the girls had a friendship with Ali, it was really Courtney. Then, the real Ali was visiting home the night of the end of year sleepover, Ali killed Courtney. Ali was sent off to another hospital the next morning and no one thought anything of it. And since Courtney stole Ali’s identity, she wore Ali’s signature -A- ring. So the real Ali is waiting for that perfect time to take revenge on the four girls who helped her sister steal her life. Ali makes her first public appearence since the switch and murder in the last book. Ali is still pretending to be Courtney. She starts to go to Rosewood Day and secretly tells all the girls she’s the real Ali. Which she is, just not the Ali they knew. The real Ali read Courtney’s diary and knew everything about the girls. She lured each one of them in. The night after prom Ali convinces the girls to go to her vacation house in the Poconos. When the girls get there and Ali traps them in a small room with the doors locked. As the room start filling with smoke, they hear a muffled scream. They decide to look in the closet and Melissa is staring back at them with the rotting body of Ian Thomas sprawled on top of her. The girls remember that there is a dumb waiter behind the bureau. All the girls escape the fire. All except Ali, or so the public thinks. Ali is still alive, but no one knows where she is.
Summary
Well, since this is my first post, I feel I should post a brief summary of the series. The entire series is about four girls who are united by one girl, Ali. Ali was the “it-girl” who found a cool person in these very different girls. But, tragically Ali died. A murder? A suicide? The first book starts three years later when Ali’s body is discovered and the girls are juniors at Rosewood Day. Also, book one is when the girls start to get their first -A- texts. The girl’s smallest secrets are slowly being discovered by the reader. Hanna has an eating disorder; Aria knows about her father’s affair; Spencer stole her sister’s boyfriend; and Emily might like boys, but she also might like girls. Throughout the series the reader believes that the worst possible thing to happen to the girls is the world finding out about the ‘Jenna Secret’. But as you read more and more, you learn Ali was not the girl she pretended to be.
